Cancun is one of the most popular vacation spots in Mexico. Located on the Yucatan Peninsula, it’s known for its incredible white sand and turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea.
But, there are so many other things for couples to do in Cancun and the surrounding area besides just enjoying the beautiful beaches.
If you’re looking for some adventure, culture, history, nature, and fun, then you’re in the right place!
NOTE: You can click on any of the underlined activities in the list below to check out excursion options available through Project Expedition.
The region around Cancun and the Riviera Maya area of Mexico is the only place in the world where you can experience the wonder of cenotes. You can take a refreshing swim in these underground pools and float hand-in-hand with the one you love in the crystal clear waters.
Chichen Itza is an archaeological site from a prominent ancient Mayan city. It has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is one of the “New Seven Wonders of the World.” The impressive complex includes the iconic Temple of Kukulcan (also known as El Castillo) which is its famous pyramid structure.
If you’re in Cancun in the summer months, you could have the awe-inspiring experience of swimming with these magnificent gentle giants. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the ocean and this would certainly be a very special memory that would last a lifetime!
Escape to the sleepy little island of Isla Mujeres just off the coast of Cancun. It’s a quick 20 minute ferry ride or you could opt for a romantic catamaran ride around the island instead.
One of the most popular activities here is a snorkeling tour of MUSA, which is an under water art museum of over 500 sculptures. I also highly recommend renting a golf cart which will give you the opportunity to see the island at your own pace. There are plenty of great restaurants and spots for shopping, and there is even a turtle sanctuary with baby turtles.
Make sure to leave time for a visit to Playa Norte beach for a delicious beverage and some fresh ceviche too.
If you’re an adventure-loving couple, then ziplining at Xplor Adventure Park is a must do. This park has the highest ziplines in the area and will give you the adrenaline rush you're seeking. Experiencing the thrill of “flying” over the treetops as you zip through the jungle will be a highlight from your trip.
Be serenated by traditional Mexican music while you float along the canals in a trajinera (gondola). This nighttime attraction pays tribute to the floating gardens of Mexico City with festive colors, folklore and cuisine. This is definitely more of a fiesta experience with a lively crowd, but there’s nothing quite as romantic as dancing under the stars to live music.
7. Visit Tulum
Take a day trip to the Tulum archaeological ruins which are set on a cliff overlooking stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. You can also participate in a traditional Mayan blessing ceremony performed by a Mayan shaman from the community while you’re here.
8. Xcaret Park
There are over 40 attractions at this eco-themed park in the Riviera Maya. You can learn so much about the local flora and fauna. There are wildlife trails and cultural presentations throughout the day, and plenty of water activities to choose from as well.
Take an exciting ATV ride through the Mayan jungle for a close up encounter with nature. The lush landscape is perfect for all terrain vehicles. Get off the beaten path for a fun-filled adventure.
If you're divers, then don't miss the opportunity to head south to Playa del Carmen and take the ferry over to the island of Cozumel - one of best diving destinations in the world. The reef system here is full of diverse marine life and the incredible underwater visibility is perfect for being able to see all of the vibrant colors.
I'm curious if you've tried any of these yet? Any activities you would add to this list? Shoot me an email and let me know!
